Samana Dominican Republic

Samaná is a municipality in the Dominican Republic, which is located in the province of Samaná. Its name Samaná comes from the Taíno, written as Xamaná by the first Chroniclers of the Indies. Even today the meaning of this word is not entirely clear but, according to Alberti, it is the word of Phoenician origin that means ‘’ Place where the Carthaginian chief Zammna arrived. The natives pronounced that name as Shamana. According to the 2002 Population and Housing Census, the municipality had a total population of 51,501, of which 26,317 were men and 25,184 women. The urban population of the municipality was 79.24%. The main economic activities of the municipality are tourism, agriculture and fishing.
